Bayer Leverkusen on Course for Europa League Final
Unbeaten Run Continues with 2-0 Victory over Roma
Bayer Leverkusen have extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to an impressive 47 matches with a 2-0 victory over AS Roma in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League semi-final. The Bundesliga side took command of the tie at the Stadio Olimpico, leaving them in a strong position to reach their first major European final since 2002.
Clinical Performance in Rome
Leverkusen were clinical in front of goal in Rome, with goals from Moussa Diaby and Florian Wirtz securing the victory. Diaby opened the scoring with a superb solo effort, beating several Roma defenders before firing into the bottom corner. Wirtz then doubled the lead with a well-taken finish after a clever pass from Jeremie Frimpong.
Roma, who were unbeaten in their previous 14 Europa League knockout matches at home, struggled to create clear-cut chances against a resolute Leverkusen defense. Leverkusen inflicted Roma's first home defeat in 14 Europa League knockout matches, extending the visitors' impressive record in the competition.
Door Open to Final
The 2-0 victory in Rome leaves Leverkusen well-placed to reach the final of the Europa League. They will host Roma in the second leg on May 11th, knowing that a draw or even a one-goal defeat would be enough to send them through.
Leverkusen have been in excellent form throughout the Europa League campaign, winning all six of their group matches and then overcoming Ferencvaros, Atalanta, and Inter Milan in the knockout rounds. They will be confident of maintaining their unbeaten run and booking their place in the final.
