Ajax Bows to AS Roma in UEFA Women's Champions League Group Finale
Amsterdam, January 30, 2024
Ajax Women's Champions League campaign ended on a disappointing note as they succumbed to a 2-0 defeat against AS Roma at the Johan Cruyff Arena on Matchday 6.
With both teams already eliminated from contention, the match was largely a formality. However, Ajax failed to capitalize on their home advantage and ultimately fell short against a resolute Roma side.
Roma took the lead in the 25th minute through a stunning strike from Agnese Bonfantini. The Italian midfielder received the ball on the edge of the box and unleashed a powerful shot that flew into the top corner.
Ajax pushed for an equalizer in the second half, but they were unable to break down Roma's organized defense. The visitors doubled their lead in the 75th minute when Lucia Di Guglielmo converted a penalty kick following a handball by Ajax defender Lisa Doorn.
The defeat leaves Ajax with just one point from their six group matches. Roma, on the other hand, finished third with seven points, securing a place in the Europa League knockout phase.
